そして私たち兄弟は子供時代、たくさんの楽しみをおぼえた。近所の人たちと一日を過ごすこともよくあった。トウモロコシを皆で収穫したり (corn husking)、納屋の組み上げ作業に参加したり (barn raising)、キルトを作るための集まり (quilting bees)に出かけたりすることもあった。
調査内容
①Corn Husking, ②Barn Raising, ③Quilting Bees それぞれに関して、小説の舞台である18 世紀から19 世紀アメリカにおいて、どのような活動が行われていたかを調査して以下にまとめた。
①Corn Husking (トウモロコシの収穫)
これは文字通り「トウモロコシの収穫」を指すと思われる。ただし、単なる作業としての収穫というよりは、楽しいイベントのような側面があったと考えられる。

1924 年から現在に至るまで開催される「トウモロコシ収穫祭り」である。植民地時代のアメリカ人がいかに効率的にトウモロコシを収穫するかを考えていたことに由来し、80分間でより多くのトウモロコシを収穫したチームを競う祭り。祭りの形式は昔のアメリカの収穫の方法にならっており、Husking Pegを用いて、手作業で収穫する。祭りでは、競技のほかに農作業用機械のデモンストレーションが行われたり、バンドの演奏が行われていたりと、娯楽イベントの要素も見られた。

②Barn Raising (納屋の組み上げ作業)
“On the day of the barn raising, from sixty to a hundred or more people traveled to the building site from miles around. Announcement of the barn raising was passed by word of mouth and by scribbled notices at the feed mills, grocery stores, hardware stores taverns, and barbershops throughout the area.”

18~19世紀の北アメリカやカナダの郊外地域において行われていた納屋の建設イベントのこと。生活において必要な、家畜を飼ったり、食料を備蓄しておいたりするための納屋を、近所の人々が協力してつくり合っていた。大規模な納屋を建てるために、互いに協力し合うという公助的な側面に加えて、近所同士の交流といった側面もあったようである。
「Barn Raisingが行われる」というニュースが言づてによって村中に広まり、それを聞いて人々が集まった。男性は上棟作業を行い、女性と子どもは食べ物を持ち寄り、昼食を振舞ったりピクニックを行ったりした。
人力(場合によっては馬が引いた)によって、あらかじめ組んだ柱梁を持ち上げる工程は、60~100人もの最も多くの人が参加し、その後の壁や屋根を釘で打ち付ける作業は、大工と10人程度の協力によって行われた。
“At house raisings, log rollings, and harvest parties, every one was expected to do his duty faithfully. A person who did not perform his share of labor on these occasions, was designated by the epithet of “Lawrence,” or other title still more opprobrious; and when it came to his turn to require the Jike aid from his neighbors, the idler soon felt his punishment in their refusal to attend to his calls.”

この引用にもあるように、村の中でBarn Raisingに参加しなかった者は、村に暮らす人々から非難され、そのような不名誉を避けるために全員が参加していた。
20世紀になり、Barn Raisingは次第に行われなくなっていき、一般にはその様子は見られなくなった。

③ Quilting Bees (キルトを作るための集まり)
18世紀まで、キルトは一人で作るものだったが、19世紀半ばごろのアメリカでは数人で大きなキルトを作るのが主流になる(American Quilt)。友人や近隣の住人同士で集まって、ひとつのキルトを制作する集まりは、半分は社交の場として機能していた。“Bee”という単語はこのような近所付き合いを含む作業の意味があり、他にも“Apple-Pairing Bees”や“Wood-Chopping Bees” などがあった。
